MAUDE  M. McCAIN

Mrs. Maude J. McCain, 101, died today, Cedar Crest Nursing Home, Indianapolis.
Graduate of Danville Normal College.
Lived most of her life in Hendricks Township.
Taught in the county school system and was a member of the Second Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and Hendricks Township Extension Homemakers Club.
D/o  James Lewis  and  Ella Claire (Shaw) Cherry, born Jan. 16, 1881, Hendricks Township.
Married Oct. 29, 1902, to Jesse McCain who died Sept. 2, 1952.
Surviving:  daughter, Mrs. Herbert B. (Justine) Woodruff, Indianapolis; 8 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
Daughter, Mrs. Althea Lenahan, and a sister preceded in death.
Ewing Mortuary with the Rev. Stanley Bush officiating.
Burial:  Second Mount Pleasant Baptist Cemetery.

ELMER  McCAIN  DIES  IN  HOSPITAL

Elmer H[oward] McCain, 84, 502 Amos Rd., died Saturday,Indianapolis, IU Med Ctr.  Seriously ill one month.  
Ewing Mortuary.  The Rev. James Horner will officiate.
Burial:  Forest Hill Cemetery.
Founder of the McCain Insurance Agency here in 1926; then represented the State Farm Insurance Companies.  Son, Eugene, became associated with him in 1946.
Lifelong local resident.
Member of the First Christian Church.
Born in Washington Township July 23, 1887, s/o  George W.  and  Fannie M. (West) McCain.
Married  Ida E. Drager  Feb. 18, 1913, and she died april 2, 1955.
Surviving:  Eugene E. McCain, Shelbyville; daughter, Mrs. Doris Marilyn Lower, Rushville, 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A sister and two brothers preceded in death.

Mrs. Ida E[lizabeth] McCain, wife of  Elmer H. McCain, died today at her home on the Amos road following an extended illness; 63 years old.
Active First Christian Church worker.
Ewing Mortuary, with Rev. John Faust officiating. 
Burial:  Forest Hill cemetery.
Born in Addison township on Oct. 12, 1891, d/o  Louis and Phoebe J. (Cherry) Drager.
Lifelong resident of Shelby county. 
On Feb. 18, 1913, married Mr. McCain.
Surviving:  husband; daughter, Mrs. James Lower of Rushville, one son, Eugene E. McCain of R. R. 1, Fairland, a sister, Miss Jennie Drager  of R. R. 3 and 3 grandchildren.

JESSE  McCAIN  DIES  SUDDENLY

Jesse C. McCain, 71, widely known retired Hendricks township farmer, died suddenly last night at his home seven miles west of here on State Road 44 following a heart attack.
Suffered a light attack last Friday and a second Tuesday evening.
Spent most of his lifetime in Hendricks township, although he was a resident of Indianapolis from 1911 to 1926; employed with the Pennsylvania railroad.
Operated extensive farming interests in Hendricks township;  retired from active farming several years ago. As a young man he taught school in Hendricks township for three years. He was the son of John F. and Lilly (West) McCain and his father was a pioneer resident of the county. Born in Hendricks township Dec. 2, 1880, he was married in 1902 to Maude Cherry and they would have observed their golden wedding anniversary Oct. 29. Surviving with the widow are two daughters, Mrs. Francis J. Lenahan and Mrs. Herbert B. Woodruff, both of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; his step-mother, Mrs. Amanda McCain of Hendricks township; a brother, Cecil G. McCain, of Pittsboro, and a half-brother, Paul F. McCain, Hendricks township. A half-sister preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Ewing mortuary here and burial will be at Second Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary after noon Thursday.

          Mrs. Ruth McCain, 76 years of age, who passed away at Indianapolis early this morning was brought to the Bond Funeral Home here today.  Mrs. McCain had been living with her daughters, Mrs. Viola Harden  and  Mrs. Jennie Scearse, in Indianapolis.  Her husband  Herschel McCain, passed away April 23, 1943.  The family formerly resided near the North Salem church.
          The body will be taken to a cemetery near Shelbyville for burial.

          Last rites were held at the Bond funeral home in Nashville last Saturday for Mrs. Ruth McCain, 76, who died at the home of a daughter in Indianapolis, Wednesday, July 26.  The services were conducted by Rev. Charles Johnson, former pastor of the Nashville Methodist church.  Burial was made in the Ogden cemetery in Shelby County.

Herschel McCain, Former Resident Of County Dies

          Relatives in Waldron have received word of the death Friday afternoon of  Herschel McCain, former resident of the Waldron community.  Mr. McCain died at his home in Brown County.  Burial will be in the Vanpelt cemetery, but details of the funeral were not learned.

          Herschel J. McCain  died early last Friday morning at his home in East Washington township, following an illness of myocarditis. He had reached the age of 74 years.
          Funeral services were held at the Bond Funeral Home at 10 o’clock Monday morning. Rev. John Ford of Columbus officiated and  Rev. and Mrs. Charles M. Johnson of Nashville sang.  The body was taken to the Ogden cemetery in Shelby county for burial.
          He is survived by the widow and two daughters who reside in Indianapolis.

FLORA  M'CAIN  PASSES  AWAY

Waldron Woman, 75, Dies;
Funeral Will Be Held Tuesday
------
          Mrs. Flora Belle McCain, 75 years old, died suddenly at her home in Waldron Sunday afternoon at 1:10 o'clock, following a heart attack Saturday night.
          She was born in Liberty township, January 7, 1861, the daughter of  John  and  Louisa Hubbard Ensminger.  Practically all her life had been spent in Shelby county.  She had lived in Waldron for the past thirty years.
          On January 13, 1881, Miss Ensminger married  John Eck, who died in 1895.  One of the two children, Mrs. Pearl Haymond, born to this union survives.  A son, Herman Grover, died at the age of 19.  In 1905 the deceased married  Dr. T. J. McCain, who preceded her in death in 1910.  She was a member of a family of six children.
          Survivors, besides the daughter, are a brother, Charles Ensminger  of Jacksonville, Florida, a former local druggist; four nephews, Brady Meltzer, of Liberty township;  Ira McCain  and  Wallace Ensminger  of Shelbyville, and  Ernest Waggoner, of Newport News, Virginia and a niece, Mrs. Bert [Jessie] Griffey, of Shelbyville.
          Mrs. McCain was a member of the Waldron Methodist church and of the Easter Star at Waldron.
          Funeral services will be held at the home in Waldron at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Amos Bastin, pastor of the Waldron Methodist church, officiating, assisted by the Rev. L. W. Bean, pastor of the Waldron Baptist church.  Burial will be in the family lot in Forest Hill cemetery in charge of C. F. Fix & Son, funeral directors.
          Friends may call at the late home any time after four o'clock Monday evening.

          James Curtis McCain, age sixty-three, Methodist Protestant minister, and a native of Shelby county, died Monday at his home in Marengo, Ia [Iowa].  Telegrams received here by relatives did not state the cause of his death, which was sudden.  Funeral services will be held at New London, Iowa, Thursday afternoon.
          Mr. McCain was born March 13, 1862, in Noble township, near St. Paul.  He was a son of  Alsalom  and  Louisa McCain, and lived in Shelby county until about twenty years ago.  For a number of years he was a teacher in the schools of the county.  Later he entered the Methodist Protestant ministry.  He held several pastorates in Indiana, and then went to Iowa.  He had been preaching in a church near Marengo for some time.
          He leaves his widow, who was  Miss Ida Davison, of this county; three daughters, one brother, Harry McCain, of Arkansas; one half-sister, Mrs. Jennie Mings, of Indianapolis; and three half-brothers, Will McCain, of Waldron;  George McCain, of this city, and  John McCain, of Bengal.

Neuralgia of Heart Given as Cause of Death
Was Born Near Milford, Decatur County

          Dr. T. J. McCain, aged 73 years, 4 months and 17 days, a civil war veteran, who for the past 35 years had been a practicing physician of Waldron, died very suddenly at 5:00 o’clock this morning at his home there of neuralgia of the heart.  Dr. McCain had been in failing health for more than a year but his condition was not thought of as being immediately serious.  He had felt as well as usual up until 10 minutes before 5:00 o’clock, when he awoke feeling very chilly.  He was up and about the house Sunday.
          When he awoke he told his wife he was very chilly and not feeling well.  She got some hot irons to put upon his stomach and called  Drs. Randolph, Keeling and Coulson, of Waldron.  Before the physician arrived at the home Dr. McCain was dead.
          Mr. McCain was born in Decatur county near Milford, and was the son of  Mr. and Mrs. Jesse McCain.  He was married twice, his first wife being  Miss Jennie Curtis, daughter of  Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Curtis, who he married in 1868.  Three children were born to the union, one a daughter, Maude, dying young.  The other two, both sons, survive.  They are  Herschel, of Waldron, and  Cassius, of Trevalac, Indiana.  Mr. McCain was married the second time to  Mrs. Belle Ensminger Eck, who survives him.  She is a sister to  George Ensminger, of East Broadway.  Mr. McCain was married to her November 11, 1904.  Five grandchildren and one step-sister, Mrs. Sheldon Haymond, of Liberty township, also survive.
          Mr. McCain was a veteran of the civil war, doing service in the struggle as a member of Co. I, 8th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Cavalry.  He enlisted in the army in 1862 at the age of 19 years and was honorably discharged July 20, 1865, at Lexington, North Carolina.  He was a 32nd degree Mason, holding membership in the Waldron order and was also a member of the Waldron lodge Knights of Pythias.  Mr. McCain was a Methodist by religious creed and held membership in the Waldron M. E. church.

          The funeral services for the late Dr. T. J. McCain, who died suddenly at 5:00 o’clock Monday morning at his home in Waldron, will be held at 1:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the home.  The Rev. A. R. Jones, pastor of the Waldron M. E. church will officiate.  Burial will be made in the Ogden cemetery.  The Waldron Knights of Pythias and Masons will take part in the funeral ceremonies.

          The infant of  Charles McCain  and wife died Saturday morning of cholera infantum and was buried Sunday eve­ning at Second Mt. Pleasant.  The entire community sympathizes with them in their bereavement, and encourages them to be faithful until the coming of the Saviour, when he will reunite them as one family forever.
Notes:  Date of birth: 8 May 1900 – Shelby County, Indiana.  Date of death: 11 Aug 1900 – Hendricks Township, Shelby County, Indiana.  Indiana, Death Certificates, 1899–2011, Hendricks Township, Shelby County, Certificate and Record of Death, page 175 records that  Eva V. McCain  died at about 10 o’clock a. m. on 11 Aug 1900 in Rushville, Indiana from cholera infantum six weeks’ duration, aged three months and three days, born in Shelby County.  She was female, white, and single.  Her father’s name was Charles McCain and her mother’s maiden name  Margaret Phillips,  both born in Indiana.  The informant was Charles McCain.  Eva was buried in Johnson County on 12 Aug 1900, Edwards & Hayworth, undertaker.

          Absolem McCain  was born in Warren County, Ohio November 23, 1821, and at the time of his death, which occurred at the home of his son, John, in Hendricks township, January 3, 1896, he was seventy-four years, one month and eleven days of age. He moved with his parents from Ohio to Decatur County, Indiana, while young, and has ever since lived in Decatur and Shelby counties.
          Funeral at Bengal Christian Church Sunday January 5, 1896, W. D. Clark officiating.  D.S. Wilson & Son, funeral directors.  Interment at Second Mount Pleasant cemetery.  Funeral services at eleven a.m.
