          S. A. Harper was born near Shelbyville, Shelby county, Indiana, March 5, 1836, and died January 27, 1917, aged 80 years, 10 months and 22 days.
          In 1856 he removed with his parents to Benton county, Iowa, driving two yoke of oxen. On September 30, 1858, he was united in marriage to Nancy S. Pasco, who preceded him in death April 20, 1909.
          In 1864 the deceased located in Tama county, Iowa, where he resided until 1871, when he located in Madison county, Iowa, residing there until 1878, when he with his family located near Glasco, Kansas, where he maintained a residence until the death of his companion, since then he has made his home with his oldest son.
          To this union were born six children, three sons and three daughters, four of whom survive him. Mrs. M. T. McClellan, N.M., J.H., and W.H. Harper. The deceased members of the family consist of two daughters, Mrs. John Matthews and Mrs. Geo. Studt. He is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren.
          He was one of a family of eighteen children and is only survived by one brother, Robert Harper, of Toledo, Ohio.
          He united with the Christian church near Winterset, Iowa, in 1874. In 1880 he united with the M.E. church of this place and has been a member of "The Home Department of the S.P." since its organization.
          The last sad rites of this grand old gentlemen was held Monday morning at the Methodist church at 10 o'clock and interment was made in the Glasco cemetery.

Died: In Morristown, Shelby county, Indinana, August 1st, 1871,  Mrs. Martha Harper wife of  Erastus Harper, in the 37th year of her age.  The deceased was a sister of  J. F. and  L. M. Rhodes  of this county.
