Shelby County native, Maurice J. Clayton, 89, Eaton.
Born July 6, 1907, in Shelby County. [son of James T. & Mattie Drake Clayton].
Married June 7, 1957, Lillian (Neimeyer) Clayton, (survives).
Owned a Shelbyville car dealership, service manager in Fullerton, CA.
First Christian Church, Elks Lodge in Shelbyville.
Other survivors: sons, Richard, Glen and Fredrick; a step-son, Gary Kautsky; two stepdaughters, Elaine Long and Clara Rutz,; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral Friday For
Lifelong County Man

          James T. Clayton, 73, retired farmer, died suddenly at the Shelby County Home in Shelby township this morning. He had been in poor health for five years.
          Born in this county, August 11, 1885, he was a son of Edward and Caroline Clayton and was a lifelong county resident. He was first married to Mattie Drake, who died in 1910, and in 1914 he was married to Lennie Kaster, who died in 1934.
          To the first union was born one son, Maurice Clayton of this city, and surviving with him are three grandchildren; a brother, Estel Clayton of Smithland; and six sisters, Mrs. Harry Meiks, Mrs. Homer Boyle, Agnes and May Clayton, all of this city, Mrs. Cyrenus Hey, Washington township, and Mrs. Norman Devening, Columbus. Two brothers preceded in death.
          Mr. Clayton was a member of the Shelyville Eagles Lodge.
          Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Murphy Mortuary with Rev. James Baker officiating. Burial will be in the Miller Cemetery near Smithland. Friends may call at the mortuary after 2 p.m. Thursday.

Roy H. Clayton, 68, former Shelby county resident. Retired employee New York Central railroad, lived in Ohio. The ss/o Edwin and Caroline (Davisson) Clayton, born Shelby Co 24 Sep 1883. Married Nellie McNeely; survives with six daughters.
Also surviving, 6 sisters, 2 brothers: Mrs. Homer Boyle, May and Agnes Clayton and James T. Clayton, Mrs. Cyrenus Hey, Mrs. Harry Meiks, Mrs. Norman Devening, Estel B. Clayton.
Funeral services in Toledo.

Born in Hendricks township on July 25, 1862. D/o James H. and Sarah [VanDoren] Davisson, member Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.
October 30, 1882, married Marshall E. Clayton (he died February 15, 1937). Ten children, nine survive: May, Agnes, Mrs. Homer Boyle, James Clayton, Mrs. Harry Meiks, Mrs. Cyrenus Hey, Mrs. Norman Devening, Roy H. Clayton, Estel.
Sisters and brother: Mrs. Stephen Corvin, Mrs. Ida McCain, Mrs. Isaac Baumgardner, Frank Davisson. Miller cemetery.

Mrs. Martha Clayton, 19, wife of Frank Clayton, of near Smithland, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bassett, of Shelbyville, died at 2 a.m. Monday at the Coleman Hospital in Indianapolis. Death was caused by general peritonitis following childbirth.
Mrs. Clayton was taken to the hospital Tuesday evening, and a son, born Wednesday evening died shortly after birth.
Born in Shelbyville, May 7, 1919, Mrs. Clayton attended the Addison Township schools and the Junior High School in this city. She was married to Frank Clayton of Shelby County, Oct. 4, 1937.
Among the survivors are her husband, her mother and father, eight sisters, Mrs. W. R. Tucker, of Park Rapids, Minn., Mrs. Nellie Pike, Mrs. Joseph Lanwerlen, of Shelbyville, and Lucy, Patty, Betty, Marilyn and Mary Marie at home; two brothers Robert and Jackie Carol at home. The grandparents, Elmer Baker, of Union township, and Mrs. Mattie Bassett, of Madison, also survive.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 o’clock at the Calvary Baptist church with the Rev. Clarence Hager, pastor, officiating. Burial in the Bennett Cemetery will be in charge of Loren H. Murphy, funeral director.
The body has been taken to the home at Smithland where friends may call there this afternoon.

Funeral Services to be Held
at Smithland Church Thursday

Charles E. Clayton, 25, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ora McCarty, in Shelby township, at 2:15 o'clock Tuesday morning following a serious illness of several months. He had been ill for three years.
He was born in Shelby township, Shelby county, September 6, 1911, the son of Embert and Goldie (McCarty) Clayton, having spent all his life in this county. The youth had lived with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles McCarty, most of his life. He had spent one year and eight months at the Rockville sanatorium.
Survivors besides the grandparents are the mother, Mrs. Goldie Steffy, of Morristown; two brothers, Wayne, of Shelby township, and Ora Clayton, of Hancock county; one sister, Miss Pauline Clayton, of Logansport; five half-brothers and one half-sister, Emil, Marion, Russell, Max and Meredith Steffy, and Miss Frances Steffy, all of Morristown; and several uncles and aunts. The grandmother, Mrs. M. E. Clayton, of Shelby township, also survives. His grandfather, Ed Clayton, died two weeks ago, and a sister, Mrs. Bernadine Hill, passed away January 22, 1935.
The young man was a member of the Lewis Creek Wesleyan Methodist church.
Funeral services will be held at the Mt. Gilead Baptist church at Smithland, at 10 a.m., Thursday, with the Rev. C.C. Fields, pastor of the Lewis Creek, officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in the Miller cemetery in charge of C. F. Fix & Son funeral directors. Friends may call at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ora McCarty in Shelby township at any time.

M. E. CLAYTON DIES AT HOME

Death Comes Following Illness of Four and a Half Years

Marshall E. Clayton died at his home, five miles south of Shelbyville, in Shelby township, at 5 o'clock Monday afternoon, following an illness of four and a half years. He had suffered a stroke of paralysis.
Mr. Clayton was the son of Thomas Jefferson and Sarah Ann [Osborn] Clayton and was born in Lewis Creek, Shelby county, July 25, 1858. When he died he was 78 years, six months and twenty days old.
He was married to Caroline Davisson in October [26], 1882. He was a member of the Mt. Gilead Baptist church at Smithland, and of the Maccabees lodge at Shelbyville.
He had spent his entire life in Shelby county. For many years he was a carpenter and contractor.
Survivors are the widow, six daughters, the Misses May, Elizabeth and Agnes Clayton, who live at home; Mrs. Harry [Zulu] Meiks of Marion township; Mrs. Cyrenus [Edna] Hey, of Shelby township, and Mrs. Norman [Doris] Devening, of Addison township; three sons, Roy H. Clayton, of Toledo, Ohio; James Clayton, of Marion township, and Estel Clayton, of Hendricks township. One son Embert Clayton died in 1919. Twenty-four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, a brother, Frank B. Clayton, of Ontario, New York, and two sisters, Mrs. Tillie Miller and Mrs. Atwood [Lottie] Martz, of Shelbyville, also survive. Funeral services will be held at the home at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The Rev. J. E. Smith, former pastor of the Mt. Gilead church, will officiate. Morris H. Sleeth, Shelbyville funeral director, will have charge of the services. Burial will be in the Miller cemetery.

Mrs. Linnie Opal Clayton, 42, wife of James Clayton, died at her home in Union township, 3 miles north of Rays Crossing, Tuesday evening at 8:45, following an appendicitis operation, which she underwent five weeks ago.
She was born in Moral township, Shelby county, April 5, 1892, the daughter of Benjamin and Molly Towns Kaster. She was married to Mr. Clayton, February 28, 1914. Mrs. Clayton had been a resident of this county all her life. Besides the husband, the deceased is survived by one step-son, Maurice Clayton, at home; the aged father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Kaster, of the Knightstown Road; two grandsons, Max and Glendon Clayton; one sister, Mrs. George [Stella] Barger, of Addison township; one niece, Miss Ruth Itce, and one nephew, Maurice Barger. Funeral rites will be held at the late home Thursday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, with the Rev. Josephine B. Huffer, pastor of the Trinity M.E. church, in this city, officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Forest Hill cemetery in charge of C.F. Fix & Son, funeral directors. Friends may call at the late home anytime after 4:00 this evening.

Home of His Parents.

A complication of diseases, the ffects of an attack of Spanish influenza caused the death of Robert Lewis Clayton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Clayton at their home in Shelby township Saturday evening at 11:30 o'clock. He had his family had been living near Remington, in Jasper county, but came to the home of his parents the first of last week.
He was born in Hendricks township, Jan. 22, 1889, at his death being thirty years and one month of age. Besides his parents he is survived by his widow and five children, who are Anna Pauline, Ora, Wayne, Charles and Bernadine. There are also six sisters, Mrs. Lulu Meiks, Doris, Agnes, Edna, Elizabeth and May, and three brothers, Estel, James and Roy Clayton. He was well known in this county, especially in the southern part, and there is genuine sympathy extended to the family in their loss of this fine young man.
Funeral services are announced for Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Smithland, Hiawatha Lodge, I.O.O.F. officiating. Burial will be made in the Miller cemetery, Stewart & Fix, undertakers, in charge.

Shelby Township Citizen Died Saturday Night
Funeral Tuesday

Ember L. Clayton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Clayton of west Shelby township, died Saturday night at the home of his parents. The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Baptist church at Smithland. He was a member of Hiawatha lodge of Odd Fellows which will participate in the funeral services. The interment will be in the Miller cemetery.
Mr. Clayton left his wife and five children. He was born and reared in this county but for some time had lived in Jasper county. He came to the home of his parents ill last Tuesday. His age was 30 years. His oldest child, Bernanadine, is 9 years old. The other children are Charles, Wayne, Ora and Pauline, the latter being six months old. He is also survived by 3 brothers and 6 sisters. He was favorably known throughout the community where he died.

Sexton Dies While Filling Grave
in Fairland Cemetery

Shelbyville, Ind , Feb 8 [28?] - Cornelius Clayton, 70 years old, a veteran of the civil war and sexton of the Fairland Cemetery, dropped dead this afternoon as he was engaged in filling the grave of Isaac Saxton, whose funeral had just been held. Mr. Clayton was being assisted by some other men and a physician was called, but it was found that death had come almost instantly. Mr. Clayton is survived by his widow, a son, daughter and brother.

DEATHS AND FUNERALS

Mrs. Martha Belle Clayton, wife of James T. Clayton, died at their home in Hendricks township near Smithland, at three-forty-five o'clock Thursday night, February 3rd, 1910, aged twenty-four years, two months and four days. Her death was caused by tuberculosis of the lungs from which she had been suffering for the past year. Deceased had been a devout member of the Wesleyan Methodist church near Lewis Creek for several years. She leaves to comfort the bereaved husband, one child, Morris, only two years old. She was a grand daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Thralls of this city, and is also survived by her father, Sylvester Drake, of Noble township, a step-mother, four half brothers and two half sisters, also a brother Otis Drake of Washington township, and two sisters, Mrs. Jerry Owens and Miss Myrtle Drake , of this city. The funeral services will be held at the late home Saturday afternoon at one o'clock and will be private on account of the smallpox which is in that locality. Rev. J. P. William will officiate. Interment will be made by Stewart & Fix.

"Uncle" Tommy Claton of this [Addison] township, died at his residence near St. John's Switch, a couple of weeks ago, of general debility. He was one of the pioneers of the county, and served as County Commissioner for a number of years, acting in that capacity when the court house was located on its present site. Thus the old men are passing away as silently as the autumn leaves of the forests descend upon mother earth.
