FOLLOWING PACIFIC ACTION

Shelbyville Navy Man Dies of Wounds;
Had Been in Service for One Year

Another Shelby county man has made the supreme sacrifice in the military
service of his country.
John Sankford Basey, 34, second class fireman serving with the U.S. Navy,
died of wounds following action somewhere in the Pacific theater of operations,
according to a Navy department telegram received Thursday night by his wife,
Mrs. Lou Basey, 207 east Locust street. The official message of the local man’s
death contained no details, merely stating that F/2c Basey died of wounds
following action in the performance of his duties and in the service of his
country. The telegram added that any further information would be forwarded to
his wife as soon as possible.
F/2c Basey had been in service less than a year and had been on active sea
duty for approximately six months. He was widely known in Shelbyville, having
attended the local schools. He was employed by the DePrez Manufacturing Company
prior to his induction into the Navy.
Besides the widow, he is survived by five children.
They are Marian, 13; Joan, 11; Francella,
seven; Carmeltta, four; and Larry, 17 months. He also
leaves his mother, Mrs. Virgil Hinkle, of this city, and a half-brother, Virgil
Hinkle, who is a prisoner of the Japanese in the Philippine Islands.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR
JOHN S. BASEY IS HELD

Memorial services for John S. Basey, fireman second class, with the United
States navy, who died as the result of wounds suffered in action in the Pacific,
were conducted Tuesday night at the local Salvation citadel at 11 south Noble
street.
Capt. Paul Branum, of the Shelbyville Army Post , was in charge of the
memorial for the local man who sacrificed his life in the military service of
his nation.

FAIRLAND MAN DIES AT HOME
Robert H. Basey Leaves Three Sons;
Funeral Will Be Wednesday

Robert H. Basey died at his home in Fairland at 1:50 o’clock Sunday
morning. Death was caused from complications resulting from a broken hip, which
he received several weeks ago in a fall at his home.
Mr. Basey was born in Kentucky in November 1846, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James
Basey. When he was three years old he moved with his parents to Indiana. For
the past twenty years he has resided in Shelby county.
Fifty years ago he was married to Miss Rosa Ridenhour who preceded him
in death five years ago.
Of eight children born to Mr. and Mrs. Basey, three sons survive. They are Carl
of Lakeland, Florida, Charles of Fairland and Otis Sanford of
Greenwood. Besides the sons survivors are 14 grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.
Mr. Basey was a member of the Fairland Christian Church where the funeral
services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Charles R. Query, pastor
of the Fairland Methodist church will officiate.
Burial will be in the Fairland Cemetery in charge of C.F. Fix and Sons,
funeral directors.

Rites For Brandywine Township Man Thursday 10 A.M.
At Second Mt. Pleasant Church

George Washington Basey, 84, died at his home in Fairland this morning
at 9:50 o’clock after an illness of one month. Senility was the cause of
death.
Mr. Basey had been a resident of Fairland for the past five years and was
born in Decatur county, March 23, 1850.
The deceased is survived by five children,
Sanford and Artie Basey, Mrs.
Lida Beard and Mrs. Myrtle Anderson, all of Fairland, and Mrs. Lucy Mohr,
of Glen Flora, Wisconsin; one brother, Robert Basey, of Fairland;
twenty-nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; three great-great
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 o’clock at the
Second Mt. Pleasant Church, with the Rev. W.A. Ryland, pastor of the Fairland
M.E. church, officiating. Burial will be in the Second Mt. Pleasant cemetery in
charge of Charles M. Ewing, funeral director.

AGED FAIRLAND RESIDENT DIES

Mrs. Rosanna Basey, 82 Years Old, Heart Disease Victim; Ill A Year

FUNERAL FRIDAY MORNING

Subsequent to a year’s illness, Mrs. Rosanna Basey, 82 years old,
wife of Robert Basey, died at 4:40 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at her
home in Fairland. Heart disease was the cause of her death.
She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Ridenour and was born in
Ohio June 6, 1847. She was married to Mr. Basey when quite young, and eight
children were born to them. Mrs. Basey was a member of the Christian Church in
Jackson county. She and her husband had lived in Fairland for the last fifteen
years.
Besides the husband, she leaves three sons:
Charles and Otis of Sugar
Creek township, and Carl, of Florida. Two brothers, Albert and
Frank
Ridenour, also survive, with two stepsisters, residing in Boone County.
The funeral service will be held Friday morning at 10 o’clock in the
Fairland M.E. Church, Rev. W.A. Ryland officiating. Burial will tale place in
the Fairland cemetery. C. F. Fix and Son are the funeral directors in charge.

Mrs. Georgia Anne Basey Died Tuesday Night
At Home, Mile West of Fairland

FUNERAL SERVICE FRIDAY

Mrs. Georgia Anne Basey, age sixty-nine, wife of George Basey,
died Tuesday night at 9:15 o’clock at their home in Sugar Creek township, one
mile west of Fairland. Her death was caused by pneumonia.
Mrs. Basey was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Hogan.
She was
born in Decatur county but practically all of her life had been spent in Shelby
county. She was affiliated with the Vine Street M.P. Church here.
Besides the husband she leaves two sons, Artie Basey, Shelbyville, and
Sanford Basey, at home, and three daughters, Mrs. Roy Moore, of
Wisconsin; Mrs. Herman Anderson, of Boggstown, and Mrs. Henry Beard,
of Needham. Fourteen grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two o’clock at the Vine
Street M.P. Church, the Rev. Forrest Cridey officiating. Burial will be in the
Second Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Funeral services were
held Sunday afternoon at Pleasant View for Mrs. Charles [Anna Fout]
Basey, a resident of that town. Mrs. Basey died Thursday
evening. Burial was made in the cemetery at Pleasant View. Mrs.
Basey was 80 years old. She is survived by three sons and one daughter.

DROPPED DEAD
IN A MACHINE SHOP

Henry Basey, Former Moral Township
Resident, Victim Of Heart Disease
----------
Henry Basey, 50 years old, for many years a resident of Moral
township, dropped dead yesterday from heart disease in a machine shop in
Indianapolis, where he was regularly employed. The end came without warning to
the victim and to his fellow employees.
The body will be brought to the home of his mother, Mrs. Anna Basey,
in Pleasant View, Moral township, Sunday morning, and arrangements have been
made of holding the funeral services in the Pleasant View Baptist Church at 10
a.m. Sunday morning.
Mr. Basey had been away from this county about twelve years and during all of
that time had been living in Indianapolis. He leaves a widow, who was his second
wife, and a daughter by this second marriage. A son, Lawrence, by the
first marriage, also survives. His first wife died several years ago. Mr. Basey
also leaves a sister, Miss Ida, of Pleasant View; a brother, Alfred,
of Moral township, and another brother, Wesley, who is a resident of
Indianapolis.
